The honest version

What renting gets you — and what it costs you

Where renting shines

  • Low upfront cost: a setup fee and the first month instead of a full apartment of furniture.
  • Delivery, assembly, and pickup are handled for you.
  • No reselling, storing, or hauling furniture when you leave.
  • Full-apartment packages can include TVs, linens, and kitchenware.

Where it falls short

  • You never own anything, no matter how long you pay.
  • Over a long stay, total cost can exceed buying budget furniture.
  • Minimum terms and early-termination rules limit flexibility.
  • You may have limited say over style, and you can be charged for damage.

The process

How furniture rental works

The details vary by company, but almost every rental follows the same five steps.

  1. 01

    Compare your options

Decide between full-apartment packages, individual pieces, buying, or a furnished unit.

  2. 02

    Read the terms

Check the minimum term, setup fees, cancellation window, and what happens if you leave early.

  3. 03

    Choose a plan

Pick a package that matches your floor plan and how long you’ll realistically stay.

  4. 04

    Schedule delivery

Most providers deliver and set up; some do it before you even get your keys.

  5. 05

    Plan the exit

Know your notice period and pickup process so move-out is as easy as move-in.

Provider spotlight

Nickson Living at a glance

Nickson is a Dallas-based company that furnishes entire apartments on a monthly plan. Its designers choose everything — furniture, TVs, linens, kitchenware, and décor — and its own install team sets it up before you arrive, then removes it when you leave. Its FAQ lists Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and Oklahoma City as current service areas.

The tradeoffs: you don't choose individual pieces, the minimum term is 3 months, and leaving after the 30 days cancellation window means owing the rest of your term.

Frequently asked questions

Is renting furniture cheaper than buying?

Not always. Renting costs far less up front, but over a long stay the monthly payments can add up to more than buying budget furniture. Renting tends to make more sense for stays under about a year, or when you value delivery, setup, and pickup. Our rent-vs-buy guide walks through the math.

What is the shortest furniture rental term?

It depends on the company. Nickson's FAQ lists lease terms as short as 3 months. Other providers set their own minimums, and month-to-month options often cost more per month.

Which cities does this guide cover?

We cover Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin, Greater Houston, San Antonio, and Oklahoma City. Nickson's FAQ lists all five as current service areas.

Is this the official Nickson website?

No. Furnished Guide is an independent publication. We link to Nickson and may earn a commission if you sign up through our links, but we are not affiliated with the company beyond that relationship.

Do I need to be home when rental furniture is delivered?

Policies differ. Nickson says customers do not need to be present — it coordinates access with your leasing office. Many traditional rental companies schedule a delivery window and ask someone to be there.
